Book Review: The Conservative Heart – by Arthur C. Brooks

//

If you are like me, you love liberty. I am sure if you are reading The Liberty Conservative, you hate big government. You probably imagine the founding fathers turning over in their graves by the government’s intrusions of your God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

One of the reasons I write for The Liberty Conservative is because I desire to hone my ability to articulate the principles of liberty. Every day I met people who want to share with me the problems they see with our government. The more I study the principles of liberty, the better I am at sharing the principles of liberty.

Arthur C. Brook’s book, The Conservative Heart is a must read by every conservative. In this book, Brooks educates the reader on the proper way to articulate conservative principles. Brooks argues that there is a perception that conservatives are economic wonks but that they do not care about individuals.

Brooks demonstrates that it is not enough to understand sound conservative principles, but we have to be able to share it from the heart. A message from the heart touches the heart. A message that touches the heart will demonstrate that we care. When we care, our message will have a greater impact than a 20-page power point presentation with irrefutable facts and figures.

Conservatives hate to see good tax payers dollars being given to government programs that are a handout and not a hand up. Conservatives want to see everyone succeed, but they do not see government as an effective solution to helping the poor. Most conservatives agree with Ronald Reagan that “government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.”

Conservatives do not want to see poor living on the streets. However, the way we communication our message has created an image that we do not care. It does not matter the issue – because conservatives bring up the economic talking points, the public perception is that we do not care.

Brooks is the president of American Enterprise Institute (AEI). AEI is one of the leading conservative think tanks in Washington D.C. One of AEI primary focuses is on economic policy. Brooks is constantly required to defend conservative economic principles.

Brooks understands that if he is going to be effective, he cannot just preach to the choir and tell conservatives what they want to hear. He has to share his conservative economic message so that those who are of an opposite political persuasion will listen.

In this book, Brooks helps us understand how we can repackage our conservative message so that independent voters understand that we care. This book is a must read if you want to learn how to communicate more effectively with those who do not understand that you do not care.

This book is chalked full of interesting stories that will captivate the reader. Brooks gives us several important points that each one of us needs to understand. These are the same points that he uses when he is teaching Congressmen how to articulate conservative principles.

If you are going to run for office, read this book. If you work in politics, read this book. If you are going to talk with a liberal on conservative principles, read this book. If you want to be an ambassador for the principles of liberty, read this book. If you get tired of hearing that conservatives do not care about the poor, read this book.
