Cruz: “I Am One Of The Most Libertarian Members Of The Senate”

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) called for keeping of the government out of the bedrooms of consenting adults in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.

Following recent controversy surrounding an explicit video being ‘liked’ by Cruz’s official Twitter account, CNN’s Dana Bash asked the Senator whether he thought that it was ironic, given that he had defended a ban on the sale of sex toys in Texas as the state’s Solicitor General.

Cruz responded by downplaying it, accusing the mainstream media of running stories that are “totally false”. He went on to explain that he was merely doing his job as Solicitor General by defending the laws of the state of Texas, even though he personally regarded the law as a “stupid law”.

“I am one of the most libertarian members of the Senate,” Cruz continued. “I think it’s idiotic.”

Asked by Bash to confirm his stance on the law, Cruz replied: “I am saying that consenting adults should be able to do whatever they want in their bedrooms.”

“The media and the left seem obsessed with sex – let people do what they want!” Cruz exclaimed.

Although Ted Cruz generally focused on targeting Tea Party and Evangelical voters during his unsuccessful 2016 presidential run, he also sought to include libertarians within his conservative coalition, receiving the endorsement of leading libertarian U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, and participating in a 40 minute interview with the Liberty Conservative. He has in the past sought to emphasize his common ground with libertarians on fiscal policy, indefinite detention, and regime change, and has also expressed a knowledge of libertarian literature, including works by Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman, and Murray Rothbard.

    • So if you answer a question, or tell anyone anything about yourself, you are no longer those things, because you had to say them. Think about how dumb your comment is, really. I mean, I understand the notion, but the words make no sense, especially for a politician who is constantly asked questions and has to say what he is, etc.

  1. I understand a lot of people want to immediately reject a Christian, but those who are fiscally conservative and (at least partially) socially liberal should not be outright rejected by libertarians. In search of purity, the Bernies of the world may rise again.

    • You get it. It’s a matter of relativity, and when you compare him to most other Senators, who are extreme left or right, this comment absolutely holds up.

  2. Meaning (reading between the lines here) “when you find out that I Ted Cruz was the one who was looking at porn and not a staffer, don’t hate me, I’m a libertarian.”

  3. As a libertarian, I really used to admire Cruz. Even supported him in his presidential election bid. But after this vote to continue a pointless war, I cannot support him any longer. At this point, he’s about as libertarian as Bush.

    • I am wondering what was un-Constitutional. Care to specify? Seems to me that the President went to Congress and requested authorization to prosecute a war by using military force against ‘extra-state’ actors (terrorists) who might be in a variety of countries, etc.

    • Are you incapable of logic. The Texas Solicitor General is not supposed to decide which laws he will defend, and which laws he will sit on his hands and not defend. (OR – do you think any Solicitor General can be like Obama…and make personal decisions on which laws to support – or not…?)

  4. People are saying this is laughable, but other than Paul, Massie, Amish and maybe one or two others he is kinda right.
I’m not conceding this to Cruz because I’m a supporter, I’m doing it to put attention on the fact that Cruz is one of the most libertarian members in congress, which is very sad.

    • Voted to table Rand Paul’s motion to debate sunsetting a pointless war, wants civil asset forfeiture money to pay for a wall, he’s more talk than he is substance. Take for example his 23 hour “filibuster” where he reads green eggs and ham, rather talking about more important issues he could be giving light to while the cameras are on him…..
He’s a 7/10. in my book. I’d trade him for a Mike Lee anyday who’s a 9/10 in my book.

    • The AUMF authorizations …please specify how they were un-Constitutional….or is that the Randall interpretation of the Constitution?

  5. I still think it’s funny that anyone actually thinks his votes on most issues are ‘libertarian.’ Simply because he says he is ‘libertarian’ or casts a few votes that are also supported by libertarians doesn’t make him philosophically or even technically one. The totality of his votes (and the cosmetic votes he made for legislation he knew would not pass and where his vote did not matter) are statist light at best. This latest vote is yet one more in a long line that fits perfectly into the worldview of one whose ‘liberty’ views will always take a back seat to the State’s need to control.

    • AND – we have another idiot popping up. A little logic please…..If Cruz was a Canadian, then there would be paperwork showing when/how he became naturalized and became a US citizen. There is none, because none is needed, because his mother was an American citizen.

  6. He is such a hard core libertarian he voted to kill (table) Rand Pauls DoD bill Amendment to sunset the 16 year old AUMF. Also Loretta Lynch, usa freedom act, and every budget.

  7. Ted:
You keep using that word Libertarian. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

    You are an interventionalist
You support the war on drugs
    You oppose same-sex marriage
You support the Fed and quantitative easing
    Among other things
