In the safe Republican state of Wyoming, the right-wing, national-conservative Freedom Caucus has taken over the state House of Representatives, seizing the four key positions in House leadership following the November elections, according to a report by Wyofile.
Freedom Caucus members took the positions of Speaker, Majority Leader, Majority Whip and Speaker pro tempore.
This marks the first time the anti-establishment group has taken power in a state legislature. Over the past few years, the Freedom Caucus has grown rapidly in state legislatures around the country, with a presence in dozens of states across the country.
The Freedom Caucus generally advocates for more stringent restrictions on illegal migrants, tougher election integrity measures, bold tax reductions and pro-cryptocurrency policies. It is best known for the House Freedom Caucus in the U.S. Congress, which has gained attention for being among Congress’s leading defenders of President Trump, particularly during the two impeachment proceedings.
In the U.S. Congress, the Freedom Caucus faces opposition from the Republican Governance Group, a group of liberal and moderate Republicans who promote bi-partisan initiatives with Democrats, rather than a more bold and conservative agenda. Unlike the Freedom Caucus, the Governance Group advocates for open immigration policies and greater acceptance of LGBTQIA+ individuals in society.
