Prospective Libertarian Party presidential candidate Rep. Justin Amash (L-MI) has praised his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, in a Thursday interview with Politico.
“As I said before, I think that from a personality standpoint, I’d take Biden,” told Politico‘s Tim Alberta. “I think Biden is a better person than the president—I mean, by all appearances at least. I can’t speak to his personal life or any of that, but he seems to be a better person.”
Numerous questions about former Vice President Biden’s personal character have been raised in recent weeks after his former staffer, Tara Reade, accused him of sexually assaulting her in 1993.
“His hands went underneath my clothing and he was touching me in my private areas and without my consent,” Reade told NPR.
Amash’s defense of Biden will surely aid Biden at a time when the Trump re-election campaign has sought to emphasize Reade’s allegations in attacks on their Democratic rival.
Amash’s remarks were reminiscent of 2016 Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee Gov. Bill Weld (R-MA), who repeatedly praised Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during his campaign, despite formally running against Clinton.
“I’m sick and tired of seeing her dragged through the mud by a man who makes absolutely no demands on himself as to moral behavior, including common decency or truthfulness,” Weld said, just days before election day.
