McCarthy Democrats and the new Red Scare

/

McCarthyism seems like a moment in the long distant past when fear of the spread of communism and the influence of the Soviet Union gripped the nation. Spying was a threat, especially given the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted of working for the Soviet Union and later executed via electric chair. People’s character became under attack as hysteria rose, with accusations of communist connections hanging over some like a dark cloud. Democratic President Harry Truman created a program to evaluate the loyalty of federal employees, while Senator Joseph McCarthy would lead investigations into those accused of communist ties.

Since then, we’ve come a long way. Or at least we think we have.

The Soviet Union has been gone for two and a half decades now and foreign politics have changed to a degree since the Cold War. But one thing that has stuck is the hatred of the Russians. Why? For Republicans, it seems irrational. Do they run a fair, open, and free country? Maybe, maybe not; but neither do we.

For Democrats to criticize the Russians is absolutely hypocritical.

We’re living in an era of unprecedented globalization. With global organizations like the United Nations, regional organizations like the European Union, and technological advances like social media, the world has been brought even closer together. As we move forward as a planet, relations with countries like Cuba have become normalized.

But not Russia.

It’s all political, considering how many times in the past the United States has had no problems supporting tyrannical countries like Saudi Arabia. Now not only is Russia that scary country the politicians all warn you about, they’re also trying to use Russia to scare you away from being informed about the real Democratic Party.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Ben Ray Luján sent a letter to the National Republican Campaign Committee asking that leaked memos not be used by Republicans because they could have been doctored. He then stated that using documents supposedly leaked by the Russians would mean that they’re aiding the Russian government, implying they would be guilty of treason.

Russia has been accused of being linked to just about any negative thing leaked about the Democratic Party. The WikiLeaks e-mail dump involving Democratic National Committee leadership was supposedly a Russian job. The same is said of other leaks, including a recent memo that showed Democratic leadership instructing members not to aid Black Lives Matter. The memo also instructed Democrats to avoid saying “all lives matter” and mentioning black on black crime.

We’ve learned a lot from the various leaks about the Democratic Party and how they operate. The new Red Scare may be upon us, with Democrats hiding behind Russian fearmongering to cover up their own tactics and beliefs. Now we know that the Democrats will only exploit concerned black activists for political gain and really don’t believe that all lives matter.

Is it Russia’s fault that the Democratic Party has this belief system? That is the implication of party leadership when they try to use possible Russian involvement as a diversion.
