Sexual assault allegations have been rocking American society. From Hollywood to Washington D.C., prominent figures are being outed as sexual abusers and rightfully being called out for their actions. Individuals such as Harvey Weinstein have been ousted from their positions of power and influence for their prior actions. While Hollywood has begun to cleanse itself of the outed abusers, the story is different in Washington D.C.
It has become clear that taxpayer money has repeatedly been used to settle sexual assault allegations in the nation’s capital. This is an alarming trend, and the public still understands very little about it.
One person who was outed for using taxpayer dollars to cover up inappropriate behavior was prominent Democratic politician John Conyers (D-MI), who has served in the House of Representatives for decades. He is the epitome of the swamp.
Buzzfeed released a bombshell report of numerous complaints against Conyers, including allegations of unwanted physical contact and sexual advances. One instance was in 2015, when the Democratic politician settled a wrongful dismissal complaint from a former employee who claimed she was fired for not giving sexual favors to the Detroit Congressman.
Republicans have predictably reacted with uniform outrage against the Democratic politician’s sexual activity, the same cannot be said for all Democrats though. Some Democrats have stood up to Conyers while other party members have been slow to respond or even resorted to defending the embattled politician.
One of them is Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
In an appearance on “Meet The Press,” she defended Conyers as “an icon of our country.” She took her comments even further, stating he has “done a great deal to protect women.” There are numerous women who have worked on Capital Hill who would apparently disagree, but Pelosi doesn’t care much about them.
Does making unwanted sexual advances against women really protect them? What about demanding sexual favors? Is unwanted physical contact protecting them? I suppose Ted Kennedy protected women in similar ways during his years of service inside the Beltway.
Pelosi refused to defend the accusers’ accounts, repeatedly calling the allegations into doubt and claiming ignorance of the situation. This behavior was particularly shameful coming from a political leader, an elected public official, and the member of a political party that claims it supports women. After the Meet The Press appearance, her office staff predictably went into immediate damage control.
A statement was released containing much stronger wording, taking a firm stance against sexual assault. The statement commended the brave women for coming forward and stating that any credible allegation must be investigated by the Ethics Committee. While the statement itself isn’t wrong, it’s clearly contrary to what Pelosi herself said in her television interview. No amount of political damage control will change that.
Since last year’s failure to stop Donald Trump’s election to the White House, Democrats have found themselves lost and in search for answers. Despite a need to start anew and chart a different course, the same political leaders were elected. Pelosi has long been considered apart of the old guard that is more focused on protecting the Democratic establishment than anything else. Her own stated protection of Conyers and casting doubt on his accusers’ allegations speaks volumes about her lack of character and the lengths she will go to to protect her cronies.
what else could she do the Congressional Black caucus just told Conyersto stay on so where was the nut from the Cuckoo’s nest supposed to say.
Typical liberal response. They cover their own in crime.
Notice how Pelosi has never been sexually harassed, I guess she still hold out hope.
