The Republican primary, though essentially over for some time, is officially reaching its natural end. The Republican National Committee is doing everything within its power to come together around the nominee and ensure any uprising is crushed. This is not new, as it happened in 2012 when former Texas Congressman Ron Paul attempted his own uprising. This is how political parties operate.
The #NeverTrump crowd made another stand, attempting to unbind the delegates. Like in 2012 with the Paul campaign and the liberty movement, the opposition was defeated on a voice vote that is essentially left up to the discretion of the chair.
Let’s face a number of facts first.
One, nobody is going to mount an anti-establishment push and take down the Convention Chair on a voice vote. If this is your end game, the game is already over.
Two, for this reason and a multitude of others, the #NeverTrump movement was never a serious movement. It never meant to win.
To be clear, there is nothing wrong with opposing Donald Trump. There are a number of reasons to take issue with him, such as some policy proposals or his general demeanor. But for a united front to work, the trick is to be united. The #NeverTrump movement didn’t understand this and never materialized beyond social media complaints.
All those who would come to form the #NeverTrump movement spent the early primary months underestimating Trump and then failing to form a legitimate resistance after they realized he was viable. Instead of selecting a candidate when there was enough time on the clock to establish a barricade across Trump’s path to the nomination, the movement remained scattered.
This point is highlighted by perennial loser Mitt Romney, who never passes up a chance to be an opportunistic loser. When he came out swinging at the controversial businessman for just ten more seconds in the spotlight, he did so without directing the movement. We get it, Trump is a bad man, but what’s the plan?
There wasn’t one.
The #NeverTrump crowd needs to understand this is largely their fault though.
Trump wouldn’t be the nominee right now had all those desperately opposed to Trump in the Republican Party actually known what they wanted. And they didn’t. For all their memes, posts and tweets, they still don’t understand it.
Now Donald Trump is the Republican presidential nominee. This leaves a lingering fear for many that he could be more of a dictator than previous presidents and others fear what he may become. If that’s the case, it’s clearly at odds with what the Presidency is supposed to be constitutionally. Do something about it.
There are third party causes, such as the rising Libertarian Party with a ticket on the edge of reaching the debate threshold. There are strong conservatives and libertarians running for various offices from Congress down to School Board across America. If the #NeverTrump crowd sincerely believes Donald Trump is the worst answer for America, the remainder of the political landscape needs to change. Get these other candidates into office.
Do something. For the first time this election cycle, the #NeverTrump crowd needs to be effective.
