President Trump Praises 2nd Amendment At CPAC, But Endorses Background Checks

President Trump largely neglected to mention his new push for gun control during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday. He instead touted his conservative record while hammering familiar targets such as the Democrats, globalist trade deals, and the fake news media.

“No President has ever cut so many regulations in their entire term that we have cut in less than a year,” Trump said. He spent most of his speech talking about the economic progress America has made during his tenure regarding deregulation, energy, tax cuts, and other issues.

Trump claimed that his government would never allow the 2nd Amendment to be taken away to massive applause from the audience, but failed to mention that he was in the midst of a gun control push as he made the statement.

“I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue – I hope!” Trump wrote in a tweet yesterday morning. This flip-flop came after a school shooting in Parkland, Florida claimed 17 lives.

“Why should a 20yr old single mom be denied the right to defend herself and her kids? We should lower the age to buy a handgun to 18, instead of raising the age to buy an AR15,” liberty-minded Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) wrote in response to Trump’s tweet.

If Trump follows up on his rhetoric, he will arguably have a more strict record regarding gun control than his predecessor, Barack Hussein Obama. The fear of Obama caused weapons to fly off the shelves like never before, but it may be Trump who actually delivers on gun control if his tweet can be believed.

However, Trump continues to play both sides as the debate continues on. While he pushes for gun control, he kisses up to the National Rifle Association. Trump wrote the following in a Tweet yesterday: “What many people don’t understand, or don’t want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the [NRA] are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing.”

During one part of his CPAC speech, Trump polled the audience and asked them whether they prefer tax cuts or the 2nd Amendment. The crowd overwhelmingly chose the 2nd Amendment. He defended the repeal of gun free zones in school areas later in his speech while arguing for strengthening background checks. Trump would be wise to listen to his constituents, and reverse course on gun control immediately.
