Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has accused the Obama administration of having illegally attempted to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election in a tweet sent out Thursday.
“Time to investigate high ranking Obama government officials who might have colluded to prevent the election of [Donald Trump]!” Paul stated. “This could be WORSE than Watergate!”
Paul has previously suggested that the Obama administration may have illegally spied on his own 2016 presidential campaign.
“I have formally requested from the WH and the Intel Committees info on whether I was surveilled by Obama admin and or the Intel community!” Paul stated on Twitter in May.
Paul’s tweet followed a similar accusation by President Trump on Twitter that Obama had wiretapped his office before the 2016 election.
“Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my “wires tapped” in Trump Tower just before the victory,” Trump said. “Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”
A month prior, former U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice admitted she had attempted to “unmask” Trump officials who had been the subjects of surveillance during the transition period.
In recent days, leaked texts by FBI agents involved in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation revealed a strong anti-Trump bias, lending further credence to Donald Trump Jr.’s suggestion that subversive elements within the federal government are seeking to undermine the President.
If true, the allegations made by Paul and Trump would represent a terrifying infringement of civil liberties by the Obama administration. While this behavior may be common in third world countries, few anticipated it would be carried out in 21st century America, which prides itself on democratic values.
