Rep. Massie: Trump “Deserves The Nobel Peace Prize” If He Ends Afghan War

/

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has called for President Donald Trump to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize if the President in successful in his efforts to negotiate a peace deal with the Taliban and subsequently end the War in Afghanistan.

“It’s refreshing to see peace being seriously discussed. The next step is bringing our brave troops home from Afghanistan,” Massie wrote on Twitter. “Trump deserves the Nobel Peace prize if he ends this war.”

President Trump is said to be close to signing a historic peace agreement with the Taliban, the Islamist militant group that has been fighting U.S. and Afghan government forces in Afghanistan since it was ousted from power there in 2001. Trump has long expressed a desire to withdraw U.S. troops from the country, and has already made efforts to scale down the U.S. military presence there.

The first step towards peace with the Taliban is a “reduction in violence” agreement, which was announced by Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday. This agreement will include a seven day ceasefire and would start a ten day clock for direct negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government. Should these talks succeed, the U.S. would go ahead with a military drawdown over the coming months from the current 12,000 U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan to just 8,600.
