Roy Moore defeats Senator Luther Strange in Alabama primary

/

The weeks leading up to the Alabama primary have been intense as both sides of the Republican Party have labeled this a critical fight. Establishment Republicans amped up their attacks as Senator Luther Strange’s opponent, former State Supreme Court justice Roy Moore. Similarly, anti-establishment Republicans have made this a battleground in their quest to drawn the swamp.

The results are in however and the polls were right. The race has been called for Roy Moore.

The Republican establishment candidate was defeated despite millions of dollars spent on the race. The support of President Donald Trump also couldn’t save Senator Luther Strange from the uprising of dedicated conservative activists.

The outcome will undoubtedly send shockwaves throughout politics.

While the results are still rolling in, multiple outlets are calling the race. At the time of publication, Moore has a 15% lead with almost half reporting.

As the results become finalized, the biggest story will be the margin. This can be an indicator of how bad things got for the Republican Party establishment in Alabama and how bad they will get elsewhere going forward.

How will the Republican Party respond? There are a number of storylines to follow in the coming days and weeks.

How will Senator Strange’s loss affect President Trump, who now has been delivered a congressional defeat? Does a loss affect President Trump’s endorsement power?

Speaking of the President, will he turn the tables on the Republican establishment and blame the likes of Leader McConnell for the stunning defeat?

To be sure, the victory of Roy Moore tonight in Alabama has set the stage for a conservative grassroots uprising against incumbent Republicans. As Steve Bannon recently said at a rally supporting Moore, the reckoning is coming.
