The Walking Dead’s 90 minutes of gun control for Alexandria

/

The Walking Dead has been a huge hit for cable network AMC. The comic book adaptation tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world where zombies have overrun the world. Governments have fallen, leaving pockets of survivors to cope with the new world. It speaks a lot to the human experience. The zombie genre itself has been no stranger to social commentary, more prominently speaking to the times through George A. Romero’s films about the undead such as Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead.

Tonight’s episode spoke to a prominent debate occurring in America now. Moderate spoilers ahead for those who have not yet seen the episode, be warned.

Negan is the new bad guy on the scene. A ruthless tyrant, he leads a group of survivors who rule by fear and takes by force. His entrance on the show was marked by the brutally savage beatings of two prominent characters in order to send a message to the survivors. Since this point, there have been a number of metaphors for society.

In the extended ninety-minute special, Negan found his way down to a fortified city known as Alexandria. Here, survivors have come together and build a walled in encampment to carry on living he best they can in the world. After gaining entrance into the city, Negan noted that the citizens of Alexandria had a lot of guns. To that point, he stated he wanted the guns confiscated.

The gun control debate thus becomes relevant here on two fronts. First, the issue of gun confiscation and Gun Free Zones. After this scene, Negan then finds the armory and takes the inventory of firearms to use in the confiscation.

Gun registries and owner databases have long been a source of distrust among Second Amendment supporters. The reason for this is exactly what is seen on screen: the confiscation of guns. Negan uses the armory inventory list to hunt down all of the guns in Alexandria and confiscate them for his group. As he makes clear, the existence of guns presents a threat to his control.

Another point gun rights advocates often make is that the elimination of guns only leaves the law-abiding and innocent defenseless, because bad people will always acquire guns. Alexandria’s citizens at that point have been disarmed, leaving the governing body as the only ones with weapons. According to a gun control advocate’s logic, this would leave the people in a safer place.

It’s tragic two beloved characters on the show, one of which had been there since the beginning, were executed by Negan. Senseless violence and slaughter of the innocent is wrong and here in the real world, we all know that. But we are also aware that, as gun control advocates also tell us, the existence of guns is to blame for all violence, whether it be gun related or not.

If guns had been banned and confiscated by Negan sooner, would Abraham and Glenn still be alive?

  1. Banning guns is a pipe dream of the left. Prohibition of anything does not work in this country. If people really want a product, they will find a way to get that product.

  2. {But we are also aware that, as gun control advocates also tell us, the existence of guns is to blame for all violence, whether it be gun related or not.}

sorry. but violence and evil is in the heart of man, not in an inanimate object.
abraham and glen were killed, with a bat, while UNARMED…
    SERIOUSLY PEOPLE, USE YOUR HEADS

  3. Marxists and Islamists who infect our federal government plus the media prostitutes who protect them will gleefully lie, falsify, fabricate, slander, libel, deceive, delude, bribe, and treasonably betray the free citizens of the United States into becoming an unarmed population. Unarmed populations have been treated as slaves and chattel since the dawn of history.

The Second Amendment foes lying about gun control – Firearms are our constitutionally mandated safeguard against tyranny by a powerful federal government.

Only dictators, tyrants, despots, totalitarians, and those who want to control and ultimately to enslave you support gun control.

No matter what any president, senator, congressman, or hard-left mainstream media hookers tell you concerning the statist utopian fantasy of safety and security through further gun control: They are lying. If their lips are moving, they are lying about gun control. These despots truly hate America..

These tyrants hate freedom, liberty, personal responsibility, and private property. But the reality is that our citizens’ ownership of firearms serves as a concrete deterrent against despotism. They are demanding to hold the absolute power of life and death over you and your family. Ask the six million Jews, and the other five million murdered martyrs who perished in the Nazi death camps, how being disarmed by a powerful tyranny ended any chances of fighting back. Ask the murdered martyrs of the Warsaw Ghetto about gun control.

Their single agenda is to control you after you are disarmed. When the people who want to control you hold the absolute power of life and death over your family, you have been enslaved.

Will we stand our ground, maintaining our constitutionally guaranteed Second Amendment rights, fighting those who would enslave us?

  4. Good article that articulates well some of the thoughts I had while watching. I also really like the new format of the site much better than the old.

  5. The entire episode was one large gun control wank fest and executive and writer meddling with more than twenty minutes corporate logos between the five minutes of shown episode. Not only was it propaganda but it was propaganda made to deliberately ruin developed characters. Note they rendered most of the characters idiots despite all the times they were ripping apart Negan’s henchmen, a gang of rapists, a gang of roaming psycho killers, a cannibal cult, and numerous zombie hordes. Fuck them and their half ass hypocrite Aseops.

    • I don’t know what you’re ranting about. The show is very anti gun control by making it clear that those without weapons are unable to resist those that have them and that weapons are a serious threat to tyranny. My biggest criticism is the whole zombie plot. Sorry but zombies cannot exist. Dead muscle tissue cannot function. Long dead things cannot walk, move, bite or do anything else. They should have given them some sort of ‘rage’ virus instead.

  6. When Alexandria was first featured on the show it had gun control imposed by it’s then current leader. All firearms were secured in an armory and firearms in private homes or on private persons within the walls was forbidden. That didn’t work so well and was quickly scrapped. The show is quick to point out the problems with gun control and definitely does not put out the usual pro gun control propaganda, which is refreshing.

  7. I only made it two episodes of this season and quit. I knew they were going to hook up Carol and the Tiger dude, and at that point it was more than obvious that they wanted every white character to be romantically paired with a minority, usually a black person, and I’ve had enough of their leftist agenda pushing bs. Every friggin white character is in an interracial relationship on that show now and it’s complete crap.
