A Middle Eastern country is banning the new film Wonder Woman, but not because the film is about a feminist icon who battles criminals like her male counterparts, Superman and Batman.
The ban from Lebanon, which was put in place a mere two hours before the film was to appear on movie screens in the country, has to do with the background of the actress portraying the superhero.
Israeli actress Gal Gadot once served in the Israeli army, and has in the past supported Israeli military operations, particularly in Gaza in 2014.
Lebanon considers itself at war with Israel and won’t allow its citizens any contact with Israelis — travel to Israel has been banned, as well.
A film reviewer in Cairo, Alaa Karkouti, is outraged and believes the ban won’t spread to other countries in the Arab world.
Karkouti believes the “ban [is] out of order because it’s not about content,”
“It’s not an Israeli actress in a film about Israel or about a sensitive political issue.”
Even Lebanese citizens are speaking out against the ban.
Blogger Elie Fares, who has a large audience, stated, “Resist what? A movie about an iconic superhero who’s been part of popular culture for over 70 years? A movie in which the lead actress happens to be Israeli.”
Fares believes such a ban will spread to “Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Viber, Starbucks, all smartphones and laptops.”
