Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has never shied away from controversy in Congress, and that has not changed regarding Confederate monuments. While many of his Republican colleagues are crying crocodile tears for ANTIFA and radical leftists, Massie came out with a strong defense of the monuments during a heated debate on FOX News.
“I think vandalism is a very bad thing. I agree with President Trump and Matt Bevin. This is part of our complex and interesting history,” Massie said in defense of the Confederate monuments.
Massie went head-to-head against Sadiqua Reynolds, CEO of the Louisville Urban League. She is leading the charge to remove Confederate monuments from public places throughout the state of Kentucky, and was not convinced by Massie’s arguments.
“The reality is, is that those in the majority and not even all, but these folks who have erected these statues to celebrate people who were murders, who were treasonous, who were willing to die in order to save slavery,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds continued on to say, “I think history is very important. It’s the only way that you keep from making the same mistake. That being said, we can do that in a school setting, in a museum setting. You don’t have to have monuments and Confederate flags to celebrate something that was so damaging.”
Massie said that he thought that the monuments should stay in place to spur healthy civic-minded reflection, particularly amongst the youth.
“…for 150 years we’ve had Confederate monuments and union monuments peacefully coexisting in this state. And as I grew up here in Kentucky, you know, looking at those monuments and asking… Why are these monuments here? I think it’s instructive and an important part of our history, I would hate to see these monuments all be taken down,” Massie said.
Opinion polls have consistently shown that the people are on Massie’s side, as a firm majority supports keeping the monuments up despite the relentless propaganda blitz from the liberal media.
