The tumultuous relationship between the House Freedom Caucus and Donald Trump has run the gamut throughout his young presidency. The hard-line conservative lawmakers stymied Trump and drew his ire on health care reform, but on the issue of immigration, they are firmly in his corner and agitating aggressively to get his border wall appropriated in the budget.
“There is nothing more critical that has to be funded than funding the border wall for two reasons,” Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) said in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News. “One is it is a commitment that the president made to the American people and one that he intends on keeping, but the second part of that is for our national security we must secure our borders. And the American people will accept no less.”
The Freedom Caucus is so serious about their stand that they are more than willing to cause a government shutdown at the end of the fiscal year if the Congress doesn’t get their act together, remember why they were elected, and finally fund the construction of the wall.
“We’re going to build that wall, or you’ll know the name of every Republican who surrenders to the Democrats,” Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) boasted in the first campaign advertisement for his ongoing Senate campaign. Brooks has made it abundantly clear that he and his fellow Freedom Caucus members are drawing a line in the sand on this particular issue.
“If anyone is willing to stand up to Leader McConnell on behalf of the people of Alabama, it’s Mo Brooks,” Meadows said. “He’s not one that will make idle promises. If he says he’s going to filibuster until it gets done, everybody better bring their pillows because they’re going to have be staying there for a long time.”
If Trump is serious about getting his border wall funded and built, he will have to quickly distance himself from Congressional Republican leadership that is reticent to overturn the globalist status quo preferred by the special interests who bankroll them.
“What we have to do is find a way to make sure that you can get right with the law, and we’ve got to do this in a good way so that the rug doesn’t get pulled out from under you and your family gets separated,” House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said to an illegal immigrant during a townhall earlier this year. Ryan would later add that mass deportations were “not happening” on his watch in Congress.
If Trump is ready for a fight against House Speaker Paul Ryan and other GOP moderates on immigration, he will have the Freedom Caucus in lockstep behind him for that battle.
fools
I thought Mexico was paying?
“Freedom” caucus
I could deal with a few more shutdowns. Things go better when the government’s closed for some reason.
Besides, we really do need the wall.
Why? Trump didn’t include it in his budget.
Pretty sure this is false
