The Suffering of the One Percent: “Beach House” Bernie Sanders and Wife Investigated for Fraud

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), self-proclaimed champion of the underdog, has been calling for big government to put the rich elites in their place for many years. Now Bernie and his wife, Jane, may be receiving exactly what he asked for–good and hard!

Jane Sanders was the President of Burlington College, a small, liberal arts school in Vermont, from 2004 to 2011. Under her stewardship, the college fell to pieces under the weight of crushing debt. The school will be closed at the end of the month, pretty much singlehandedly because of Sanders’ mismanagement, but now a probe is singling at her and her husband for potential criminal wrongdoing.

Jane is accused of deliberately misrepresenting the number of donors on a 2010 loan application to the People’s United Bank for $10 million needed to buy 33 acres of lakefront property for the college. Additionally, Politico recently reported that prosecutors will be looking into allegations that Bernie used the power of his Senatorial office to inappropriately urge the bank to approve the loan.

“I filed a request for an investigation in January 2016 and an investigation appears to have been started right away,” said Brady Toensing of Burlington, who filed these claims to the U.S. attorney for Vermont, in an email to CBS News. “It was started under President Obama, his Attorney General, and his U.S. Attorney, all of whom are Democrats.”

In the typical nature of the gilded one percent, the Sanders family has already hired high-priced attorneys to represent them during these proceedings. Although Bernie has always portrayed himself as a principled crusader from the downtrodden, his personal finances indicate otherwise. Bernie’s Wall Street portfolio contains substantial holdings in the pharmaceutical, banking and defense industries. Additionally, Bernie purchased a beach house shortly after capitulating to Hillary Clinton and campaigning for her vigorously in the wake of his failed Presidential run in 2016.

In what would be a fitting bit of irony, this man who has benefited more than almost anyone from exploiting class warfare may ultimately be hoisted upon his own petard.
