The editing staff of The Liberty Conservative is proud to announce our endorsement of Steve Lonegan for Congress in New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District.
Formerly serving as the Mayor of Bogota from 1996-2007, Lonegan is an experienced fiscal conservative with the record to back up his rhetoric. He worked as New Jersey State Director and Senior Policy Analyst of Americans for Prosperity for several years before working for the American Principles Project as Director of Monetary Policy. One of his primary issues is opposition to an unaccountable Federal Reserve.
“Today Fed policy is eating away at the value of our money, the savings of seniors, and the ability of Americans to follow that tried and true system of saving and building wealth through frugality and thrift and enterprise,” Lonegan said in a 2015 New York Post op/ed, while he was serving as director of the Fix the Dollar project.
In addition to opposing the Federal Reserve, Lonegan’s positions include banning sanctuary cities, securing the Mexican border, cutting taxes and regulations, ending Common Core educational standards, stopping Obamacare, preserving gun rights, protecting our seniors, upholding religious liberty, rebuilding American infrastructure, standing firmly with Israel, and divesting power from the federal government back to the states. He also signed a pledge not to raise taxes and to support term limits once in office.
“I defeated two statewide ballot questions that would have blown up the size of government. I took on the liberal tax-and-spend policies of Governors Jim McGrevey and Jon Corzine. I stopped Jon Corzine’s massive toll hike scheme,” Lonegan said in a campaign ad.
Lonegan previously ran for the U.S. Senate in 2013 and U.S. House in 2014, losing both times, but believes that this time around will be different. Touting himself as a pro-Trump Republican, he thinks that Trump’s rise to power has opened the door for a firebrand candidate such as himself to be sent to Washington D.C. to shake up the status quo.
“I know that an honest conservative approach to government is the best way to secure our economic future, the borders of our country, and put the American people back in control of their destiny,” Lonegan said.
The primary election will take place on June 5, 2018 for the 5th Congressional District. Two Republican challengers, John McCann and Jason Sarnoski, have already announced that they will be challenging Lonegan for the chance to unseat incumbent Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer.
